PĒHEA A TOI NGĀPUHI I PUTA?

The establishment of Toi Ngāpuhi in 2019 grew out of Piki Tū Rangitia - the Ngāpuhi 25-year arts and cultural strategy.

PIKI TŪ RANGITIA STRATEGY

The agency was created to advocate for creative and cultural excellence whilst celebrating the distinctive mana motuhake of Ngāpuhi-nui-tonu and the assertion of proud self-determination or tino rangatiratanga.

There are five strategic themes in Piki Tū Rangitia, each represented by colours which are derived from natural environmental elements and are special and significant natural resources for Te Taitokerau:
  • Cultural excellence
  • Environmental excellence
  • Learning excellence
  • Creative excellence
  • Mana whakahaere (self determination)
WHAT DO NGĀPUHI CREATIVES WANT?
Ngāpuhi creatives want the time, space and support to develop and create their art.

During consultation, concerns were raised by artists about the future of Ngāpuhi art, with fears expressed that: creativity was being choked, talent ignored and that Ngāpuhi was becoming someone else’s moneymaker.

To counter this, creatives were clear about what was needed in order to thrive.

They want access to mātauranga and also access to resources.

It was seen as important that there be opportunities for new artists and that mentoring and apprenticeships be made available for both emerging and established artists.

Access to wānanga and networking opportunities were seen as vital as was administrative support.

WHAT DO NGĀPUHI COMMUNITIES WANT?

During consultation for Piki Tū Rangitia, there were clear messages that came through from Ngāpuhi communities. They expressed a future where:
  • Artists are thriving and keeping the kaupapa and culture alive and moving
  • Ngāpuhi narratives will be easily recognised and identifiable
  • Ngāpuhi can embrace the arts more, as an extension of themselves and their whakapapa
  • Arts would be sustainable, accessible, have a spiritual element and able to be shared with the world
  • There will be more working studios for practitioners and makers with a mix of traditional and high tech alongside each other, learning from each other
  • Taitamariki, whānau and whānau whānui are exposed to the new creative experiences and their successes are elevated.
