WĀNANGA AUTE ME TE TĀRAI WAKA
DURATION: May 2022
LOCATION: Ngai Tūpoto Marae, Motu Karaka
All of the kāhui taiohi were invited to participate in a 5-day masterclass wānanga focussing on Aute (bark cloth) and tārai waka (waka sculpting). The aute roopu worked with Nikau Hindin to learn the complete process from stripping and beating the bark into aute cloth, to design theory and application using kōkōwai. The tārai waka roopu completed model waka haurua with Billy Harrison. This was the culmination of a 3 month mentorship between Rongomai Hoskins and Nikau Hindin called Te Uru Aute, which aims to foster a new generation of aute makers in Aotearoa. Proudly supported by Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage and NZ Lotteries
