About this piece
Unlike western music traditions, Polynesian music was performed for cultural expressions of identity and heritage particularly at times of high emotion and gatherings of relationship, ancestral and tribal substance, particularly at tangihanga and times of mourning. This kōauau is made from red deer bone sourced from Hawke’s bay.
