These prints are a product of researching one’s whakapapa, connections to whenua and hapū while acknowledging the tāniko patterns worn by our tūpuna. The tāniko border of Kamariera Wharepapa’s kaitaka inspired the colour palette and design of these prints as he was a big influenced of how the whānau ingoa Morunga came to be. The colours used in these prints are natural pigments from Ōmanaia, the whenua of my hapū; Ngāti-Kaharau and Ngāti-Hau. Mana Tangata Mana Hapū Mana Whenua.

My design elements are based on toi māori and are often inspired by whakairo whakarei, tā moko, tāniko patterns and my exploration in graphic design. This has led me to explore my interests in narratives and natural materials within Te Tai Tokerau. Empowered by wāhine ringatoi nō Ngāpuhi, I embrace my māori identity through my mahi toi. These encounters have formed a stronger connection to my whenua and Papatūānuku through the use of customary materials and the investigation of kōkōwai and traditional tāniko patterns.
