TAIOHI 2023

Ngāpuhi-nui-tonu.

Feet off the whenua, floating around the edges, listening for the puna who pulse somewhere in the middle. I dive in head first, body feeling all, nothing less. As I move with the oro of the present I feel the pulse of the past pushing me, future revealing itself all in one breath. I swim in and around but when I float I remember I am falling, in one steady direction home, to the future once more. Ruku, ruruku, rukutia anō.

Breeze Durham was born and raised in Wainui Kāeo. After graduating from Auckland University of Technology with a bachelor of Communication Design and Commerce in 2021 Breeze has worked as a Graphic Designer for two years. As an artist Breeze steps out of her ao of graphic design into her ao of youth and sensory imagination, drawing on her source of intuition to place herself in the same places and spaces of thought her tūpuna once occupied. Engaging in processes of making, listening and seeing which allow an open line of communication to be held as she reaches into her whakapapa searching for their dreams of the future. In her work Breeze explores ideas of Space and Time and the roles they play as Kaitiaki of our Taiao.
