Tena tatou. I am eighteen years old, and in the beginning stages of becoming a kaiwhakairo. I am passionate about our Te ao Māori history and our whakapapa, our connection to our tupuna. As I start on my carving journey I start to learn how to identify and recognise these stories within our whakairo, with support from my tutors, my whānau and my community.
The medium I work in is wood carving, traditional carvings incorporating the different iwi designs and symbols that I have been taught thus far. My creative aspiration is to learn more about my Ngapuhi whakapapa, so that I may become a confident Ngapuhi toi artist.
