TUIA KI TE MOANA - KUAKA
TUIA KI TE RANGI, TUIA KI TE WHENUA, TUIA KI TE MOANA. E RONGO TE PŌ. E RONGO TE AO.
Nothing in this world is separate - we are all part of the great tapestry of life. We are all part of our taiao, our environment, and must in turn take care of it - “Ko au ko te taiao, ko te taiao ko au.”
These three pieces are inspired by three manu of great significance in Te Ao Māori. The Huia, represents Rangi; the kākāpō, represents whenua; and the Kuaka, represent moana.
KUAKA is a pair of hair pins. Their shape reference the traditional double-hulled waka hourua. “He kuaka i te pō, kāhui waka i raro.” The cry of the migrating Kuaka at night guides the migrating fleet of waka. Referencing the interconnectedness of Māori and the environment through traditional wayfinding practices.
