TUIA KI TE WHENUA - KĀKĀPO
TUIA KI TE RANGI, TUIA KI TE WHENUA, TUIA KI TE MOANA. E RONGO TE PŌ. E RONGO TE AO.
Nothing in this world is separate - we are all part of the great tapestry of life. We are all part of our taiao, our environment, and must in turn take care of it - “Ko au ko te taiao, ko te taiao ko au.”
These three pieces are inspired by three manu of great significance in Te Ao Māori. The Huia, represents Rangi; the kākāpō, represents whenua; and the Kuaka, represent moana.
KĀKĀPO is a pair of hairpins. The Pounamu inset references the eye of the kākāpō, and Te Waipounamu where both stone and bird come from. "Kua ngaro te Huia, ka ngaro te Kākāpō." - When the Huia is gone, the Kākāpō will also disappear. Highlighting the cascading effect of species extinction.
