About this piece
This Hei Poho is made from whale bone which originates from the West Coast of the Kaipara region near Maunganui Bluff. The bone is most probably sperm whale bone and was recovered on the beach. It was obviously a whale that washed up along the coast many year previously. The decoration is a variation of unaunahi fish scale motifs.
