About this piece
Sperm whale or paraoa jaw bone is valued for such weapons because of the tough fine grained bone but also due to the knowledge that the paraoa is respected as an awesome apex predator.
These high status weapons could be given as “Mana Tūnga” symbols of substantial relationships especially at significant public events in the witness of all gathered. This wahaika is named “Te Kauika”, and will be held by the Trustees of the Reweti Marae, Kaipara.
